Tackle dark circles, puffy eyes and tear trough troubles at Cosmetic Doctor Dublin

Dr Lisa Fay

One of the most obvious signs of ageing is changes to the thin skin in the area just under the eyes.

Some people inherit genetic tendencies to dark circles or deformities in this area (known as the ‘tear trough’). Others develop them as a consequence of natural ageing.

Dark circles, the shadowy grooves under the eye, are usually the result of reduced blood circulation. Blood with a low oxygenation level looks more blue or purple. As the skin under the eye is so thin, you can actually see the darker, less-oxygenated blood through the skin layer.

Replacing lost volume with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is produced by the body naturally, but production slows down with age. This causes skin to become dehydrated and lose volume. As a result, it goes from being plump and firm to saggy and weak.

Dermal fillers contain HA, which when injected into the skin helps to attract and hold moisture, effectively filling in the skin from the inside out.

Fillers for delicate areas like the lips or tear trough are in a gel form. They are injected relatively deep into the skin and close to the bone.

Treatment for dark circles, puffy eyes and tear troughs at Cosmetic Doctor Dublin

Because we customise the treatment we provide for our patients, not everyone may be a suitable candidate for injectable fillers.

If you have tear trough deformities, you may also have discolouration, nodules or fat deposits in the under-eye area. We would therefore need a thorough consultation to help us find the best solution for you.

At Cosmetic Doctor, we have found Juvéderm Volbella HA gel to be the most effective solution to dark circles, puffy eyes and tear troughs. The treatment session takes about 15 minutes, and the injections make an immediate difference to the appearance of ageing under the eye.

The gel forms little pads inside the skin, which help to supplement the volume, fill depressions and hydrate the skin. The gel also stimulates further production of collagen, the natural scaffolding network that maintains firmness.

We take great care to minimise the risk of bruising, although some bruising is normal and will resolve itself fairly quickly.

Recovery time after the procedure is negligible, and the results are soft and natural.

Advantages of Juvederm Volbella for eye bags

One of the most satisfying results of using a filler like Juvéderm Volbella in the tear trough region is the immediate change in appearance.

Another advantage of Juvéderm Volbella is that it is long-lasting. For most patients the results last up to a year, before the body naturally and gradually breaks down the hyaluronic acid contained in the filler.

Volbella uses Vycross technology, which produces a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid for minimal swelling.

It also contains lidocaine (a numbing anaesthetic) to make the procedure more comfortable for the patient.

If for any reason the result is not to your liking, we can reverse the Volbella treatment using hyaluronidase. This takes effect within a day or two, breaking the filler down and smoothing out the treated area.
