Tear Trough Rejuvenation.

“The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides”

Audrey Hepburn.

Eyes are very important to your overall appearance, they are referred to as the gateway to the soul. Eyes are one of the first features we notice about someone when we first meet them.

Are you fed up people asking you whether you are tired, even if you have had a good nights sleep? Have you tried every concealer on the market to camouflage dark circles to no avail? If you answer yes to these questions, tear trough rejuvenation using injections of dermal filler may solve your problem. This procedure can improve tired eyes, dark circles and mild eye bags.

What are tear troughs?

Dark circles or hollows under the eyes known as tear troughs are a common problem. It can make you look tired and aged. The factors which contribute to “dark circles” are volume loss under the eye giving a hollow appearance and excessive laxity of lower eyelid skin. Often tear troughs are more noticeable in darker skin types i.e. Asians and African patients due to darker skin pigmentation.

It is important to note that dermal fillers will improve the appearance of volume loss in this area, but will not treat pigmentation issues.

Since starting to treat tear troughs regularly in my practice over 1 year ago, I have been very impressed with the effects it can make to someone’s appearance. By filling the hollow defect in the lower eyelid, it also plumps up the skin. The skin looks more youthful with less wrinkles and the eye area looks refreshed.

It is important to use non-permanent dermal fillers in this area. The gold standard for eye rejuvenation are fillers containing hyaluronic acid, a substance which occurs naturally in the skin. The effects of this treatment are apparent immediately. Dermal fillers when injected under the eye tend to last longer than in other areas. Therefore the benefits of dermal filler tear trough treatments may last longer than you anticipate. It is worth mentioning that another benefit of using hyaluronic acid e.g. Restylane or Juvederm is that it can be easily dissolved if for some reason the area is over corrected.

Injector experience and technique is vital when treating this area. The skin under the eye is very thin, therefore if too much product is injected it will show up as lumps.

What are the possible side-effects of tear trough treatment?

Some injection related side-effects can occur including swelling, redness and bruising. These side effects are temporary and usually resolve in a few days. The most common side-effect in this area is bruising because under the eye is a very vascular area. However, this can be minimised by using cannulae during the procedure and applying ice to the area immediately afterwards.
