The needles attached to the INTRAcel device conduct radio frequency (RF) energy, which creates controlled heat injury at each treatment site, denaturing collagen without noticeable damage to the epidermis. “The needles are even smaller in diameter than the 32 gauge needle used for neurotoxin injection, so the impact to the epidermis is negligible.

Minimal Damage to Surface

INTRAcel is different from fractional lasers, which ablate or damage the skin surface; but with INTRAcel the skin barrier function is preserved.

Dr. Fay has complete control over the needles by depressing a foot pedal which allows the needles to project from the handpiece of the device. The needles have an insulated coating, and only the very tip is uncoated, to deliver the RF energy exactly where she wants the thermal energy to go; the needles are tiny so there is very little damage to the surface (epidermis) of the skin.

While the INTRAcel device was originally developed to treat acne scars, it may also be successfully used for skin tightening in rejuvenation treatments and for striae or stretchmarks on the body.
