Pigmentation Treatments

Age spots, sun spots, freckles, melasma also known as the mask of pregnancy are all types of hyperpigmentation.
Frequently, patients attend our clinic wishing to remove their pigmentation and sun spots for a wedding or special event one month away. It is important to remember that the pigmentation and age spots on your face and hands did not develop overnight and it will take some time to remove them. There is no quick fix treatment for pigmentation. There are a number of pigmentation treatment options which I will discuss briefly.

I have Pigmentation, what are my options?

1. It is important to remember that sunscreen is vital for pigmentation prevention.
Make sure you wear sunscreen every single daily as part of your normal skincare routine. Sunscreen should be applied to your face, cleavage and backs of your hands in order to prevent a mis match in the appearance of your face when compared to your chest.
If you only do one thing for your skin …. Do not forget your sunscreen.

2. Glycolic acid peels treat pigmentation problems and exfoliate dead skin cells with minimum downtime.
For the best results a series of 4-6 Glycolic acid peels are recommended.

3. Trichloracetic Acid Peels
TCA peels are an excellent choice for the treatment of hyperpigmentation. TCA peeling solution is applied to problematic areas and works by peeling away the top layers of skin. Peeling can last up to 1 week. For the best results a series of 1-2 TCA peels are recommended depending on the degree of your pigmentation.

4. IPL treatments
Treatment with IPL or intense pulsed light, is often successful to treat pigmentation issues. However, it is not suitable for all skin types. it is important to be aware that IPL treatment improperly administered can make pigmentation worse.

5. Topical skin lightening products can also treat pigmentation. Products containing skin lightening ingredients, such as hydroquinone, retinoids, kojic acid, and Vitamin C are often beneficial in the treatment of pigmentation.
