One of the most common causes of excessive hair growth is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome also known as PCOS. 1 in 10 women have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). To make the diagnosis there must be at least two of the following:

  1. Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound scanning
  2. Elevated levels of male hormone or testosterone on blood testing
  3. And symptoms of reduced ovulation.

Features of PCOS include the following:

  1. Excessive body hair especially on the face, abdomen and chest areas.
  2. Acne especially in females over the age of 20 years
  3. Irregular periods or sometimes even absent periods
  4. Difficulty loosing weight

What causes PCOS?

If you have PCOS your ovaries make more testosterone (male hormone) than normal.

Tests required to diagnose PCOS

At Slievemore Laser and Skincare Clinic we can screen for PCOS.

  1. Blood tests may be taken to measure testosterone and Leutinising hormone LH
  2. An ultrasound scan of the ovaries may be advised. At Slievemore clinic we have an ultrasound scanning facility. An ultrasound scan can detect whether there are signs of PCOS e.g. A large number of follicles (small cysts) and enlarged ovaries.
