Spider Naevi: Understanding and Treating Spider Veins

What is a Spider Naevus (or Spider Telangiectasis)?
A spider naevus is a small cluster of dilated blood vessels that radiate out from a central red dot, creating a “spider-like” appearance. Also known as spider veins, these are typically harmless and appear as tiny red spots with fine, web-like lines.

Who Gets Spider Naevi?

Spider naevi are relatively common and can appear in individuals of any age. They are often seen in:

  • Children and adults– About 10–15% of the population
  • Pregnant womenor those using hormonal treatments
  • People with liver conditionslike cirrhosis
  • Individuals with thyroid issues

While spider naevi can develop on all skin types, they are usually more visible on fair skin.

What Causes Spider Naevi?

Spider naevi form when small blood vessels expand due to the failure of a tiny muscle that usually restricts blood flow. This causes the central blood vessel to dilate, with surrounding vessels branching out. Hormones, especially oestrogen, often play a role, which is why spider naevi can occur in pregnancy or with certain hormonal treatments.

Treatment Options

We provide effective, non-invasive treatment options to diminish or remove spider veins, including:

  • BBL (BroadBand Light)therapy, ideal for smaller or more superficial spider naevi
  • ClearV Laser (Nd:YAG), a focused laser option for more persistent veins

Treatment Cost: Starting from €250

Downtime: Minimal, though mild darkening or slight bruising may occur and typically resolves within a week.
