The DermaPen Micro needling system is the newest type of dermal needling currently on the market. It is used to rejuvenate the skin and as part of an anti-ageing routine helps to stimulate new collagen and elastin, which helps us look younger for longer!

It is also very effective in treating acne scarring. A lot of people visit our skincare clinic with acne, and a common side effect of bad acne can be scarring that is left behind when the person’s skin clears up. This can often leave the person self-conscious, and often it lowers their self-esteem.

Often people try to cover acne up with make-up; unfortunately this seems to make it even more obvious. Eventually they will visit us looking for options, and there are options. One of the most popular treatments we use here in the Slievemore clinic for acne scarring is the DermaPen micro needling system. This is a newest version of skin needling, which is the use of a dermal roller to roll along the face piercing the skin with needles. The drawback was you couldn’t target treat areas of acne scarring, or change the depths of the needles. It was also considered more uncomfortable. The DermaPen is considered the gold standard of dermal needling treatments.

How does it work?

The Dermapen is a hand held device about the size of a pen, it has a piece that is inserted into the top of the device, and this piece contains needles. These tiny needles penetrate the skin at different levels- depending on the depth of scar or type of condition you are treating. This micro injury causes new collagen and elastin to form and it helps with the breakdown of old collagen. This leads to smoother, more refined skin and a reduction in wrinkles due to the skin tightening effects of the treatment.

Does it hurt?

Prior to your DermaPen treatment, we apply a layer of anaesthetic gel until your skin is numb; this makes the whole process pain free. You will feel the DermaPen on your skin, so you will feel sensation, but not pain.

How long does the treatment take?

When you arrive we remove any traces of make-up or oil from your skin, then we will apply the anaesthetic, this usually takes 20 – 30 mins on average to numb the skin. We remove the gel and we apply a product as a glide medium to the skin, the needling of the skin usually takes no more than 30 minutes, but this depends on the area you are having treated.

How many treatments will I need?

Whilst you will see a positive change in your skin after just one treatment, we do however advise between 2-4 treatments, this is especially necessary if you are treating acne scarring or uneven skin tone or wrinkles.

What conditions does DermaPen treat?

Dermapen Micro needling system is used to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimises pore size
  • Skin tightening and lifting and rejuvenation

What are the benefits?

  • Less pain and redness post treatment
  • More effective treatments
  • Easier to manoeuver around the face
  • Needle depths vary to treat a variety of conditions from rejuvenation to scarring
  • Easy to treat under the eyes

What is the down time?

Immediately after your treatment your skin will appear red, and feel tight as the anaesthetic wears off, most people say it feels like mild sunburn on their skin. The skin often feels tighter. The redness usually dies down within a day or two. Some people experience mild flaking of the skin. The DermaPen is usually very well tolerated.
