PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common condition that results in dark spots or patches on the skin following an inflammatory response, such as acne, burns, or other skin traumas. Effectively treating PIH requires a targeted approach that addresses pigmentation while supporting the skin’s healing process.

The Gold Standard: Moxi Laser and Alastin Skincare

Our preferred treatment protocol for PIH combines the Moxi laser with Alastin skincare products to deliver optimal results. This structured regimen includes pre-treatment care, a customised laser treatment, and specific post-treatment steps designed to ensure safety, minimise pigmentation, and maximise outcomes. Alternative options involve pre-conditioning the skin with topical hydroquinone cream.

Treating All Skin Tones with Confidence

We are committed to providing safe and effective treatments for all skin tones, including people of colour (POC). Recognising the unique needs of diverse skin types, particularly for conditions like melasma and PIH, allows us to tailor each treatment to achieve the best possible results with minimal risk.

PIH and Melasma Treatment Protocol

Pre-Treatment (2-4 Weeks Prior)

To prepare the skin, we start with a regimen of Alastin products:

  • Alastin Regenerative Nectaror A-Luminate: Apply daily as directed to condition and strengthen the skin, enhancing treatment efficacy and recovery.

During Treatment

  • Moxi Laser: The Moxi laser is our gold standard for PIH treatment. As a thulium-based device, it effectively targets pigmentation with minimal inflammation, making it suitable for all skin types, including POC. For those at higher risk of pigmentation, we start at a lower intensity and gradually increase as tolerated.
  • Alternative Options: For particularly challenging cases, or if Moxi is not an option, we may use Mesoestetic Melanostop peelsto gently exfoliate with minimal risk of triggering pigmentation.

Post-Treatment Care (Immediate and First 2 Days)

To ensure proper healing, we recommend:

  • Icing and Moisture: Apply ice and moisturiser minimum once per day or up to 4 times daily as tolerated to soothe and hydrate the skin.
  • Topical Steroids: Fluorinated steroids may be prescribed to control post-treatment inflammation.
  • Avoid Physical Stress on the Skin: Avoid exercise, overheating, and makeup during the initial healing phase, as these can interfere with recovery.

Resuming Skincare and Normal Activities

  • Return to Alastin Skincare: After the initial recovery, resume your Alastin regimen and other normal activities to support long-term skin health and hydration.

Avoid heat activities such as the gym or working out post treatment until skin healing has occurred.

Additional Treatment Options for PIH and Melasma

For patients seeking alternative or complementary treatments, we offer the following options:

  • Obagi Nu-Derm: This system promotes cell turnover, targeting dark spots and enhancing overall skin brightness.
  • Cosmelan: A powerful depigmenting treatment, Cosmelan reduces melanin production, effectively tackling persistent pigmentation and preventing recurrence.
  • Hydroquinone and Skin Peels: With adequate preparation and follow-up care, these treatments provide exfoliation to reduce pigmentation. Regular sun protection post-treatment is essential to maintain results and prevent further pigmentation.
