Sebaceous Gland Hyperplasia

Understanding and Treating This Common Condition

What is Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia is a common, benign condition where the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin enlarge, often appearing as small, yellowish bumps. These typically occur on the forehead, cheeks, or other areas prone to oil production, especially in middle-aged or older adults. Each bump usually measures up to 3mm and may show a small central depression or a tiny hair follicle in the middle. Under close examination or dermoscopy, you may also notice tiny blood vessels around the edges of the bump.

While sebaceous hyperplasia is harmless and does not pose any medical risks, some people may choose to treat it for cosmetic reasons or if the bumps become irritated.

Treatment Options for Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Since sebaceous hyperplasia is benign, treatment is not necessary unless for aesthetic reasons or if the lesions become bothersome. Here are some of the treatment options available:

1. Laser Therapy
The Sciton 2-millimeter spot ablation laser is a precise option for removing individual bumps with minimal impact on the surrounding skin. This highly targeted approach allows for controlled removal, promoting smoother skin texture and appearance.
2. Electrocautery
Light electrocautery can be used to carefully remove individual lesions. This method uses controlled heat to eliminate the excess tissue, providing a quick solution for unwanted bumps.
3. Oral Medications
For more extensive cases, oral isotretinoin may be prescribed to reduce lesion size and prevent new ones from forming. However, the condition may recur after stopping the medication. For women, antiandrogens may also help by targeting the hormonal influences that contribute to enlarged sebaceous glands.

Treatment Overview for Sciton Laser Spot Ablation

The Sciton 2-millimeter spot ablation laser offers a targeted and effective solution for sebaceous hyperplasia, as well as other benign skin lesions, such as skin tags, moles, seborrheic keratosis, scars, and warts. By precisely focusing on each lesion, this laser treatment allows for accurate removal with minimal impact on the surrounding skin. Many patients find it an ideal option to enhance their skin’s overall tone and texture.
