Removing Unwanted Hair

At Cosmetic Doctor we use medical grade lasers to remove unwanted hair from the legs, underarms, upper lip, chin, stomach, arms, back and bikini area.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin (dark pigment) in the hair without affecting the surrounding skin.

There are several different kinds of laser hair removal available at Slievemore Clinic, depending on your skin and hair colour.

Laser Hair Removal for Fair to Medium Skin Tones

Alexandrite lasers effectively remove hair from the face and body. The have a specific wavelength of light, and are non-ablative so will destroy hair at the root but leave the surface of the skin untouched.

The Alexandrite laser can be used to target large areas of unwanted hair as it has an adjustable spot size, and will require a course of sessions to achieve the most lasting results.

Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin Tones

The Nd:YAG laser (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser), has a particularly long wavelength, which causes it to bypass the top layer of skin and head straight for underlying tissues, where many skin problems begin.

It’s particularly useful for hair removal-and indeed vein treatment-for people with darker or tanned skin as he laser is minimally absorbed by the skin’s melanin.

Like the Alexandrite laser, it is also non ablative and can be used to treat all body and facial hair issues.

Why choose Cosmetic Doctor?

Cosmetic Doctor is different from high-street beauty salons and laser clinics because it is a doctor led laser clinic.

We are aware of the medical causes of excessive hair growth. We can provide expert advice and screening on hormonal conditions such as Polycystic ovarian syndrome. This involves blood testing to check your hormone levels such as testosterone, androstenedione and FSH and LH levels. We can also provide referral letters for ultrasound testing for comprehensive screening. A beauty salon or nurse led clinic cannot offer this service. As we are a doctor led clinic we do not need to refer you back to your GP but can organise this for you in house and we can interpret your results.

Cosmetic Doctor, Dublin is staffed by skilled clinical professionals who have the training and experience to ensure all our patients receive safe, highly effective treatment.

We have the technology to treat all skin types both using medical grade technology.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Lasers work by producing pulsed light that is absorbed by the melanin, or colour, in a strand of hair. The laser heats the hair follicle destroying the hair at its root, without damaging any of the surrounding skin.

Forget about Waxing and Shaving FOREVER!

The ‘gold standard’ for laser hair removal is a Long Pulsed Alexandrite laser. For darker skin types, the Nd: YAG is the laser of choice. These lasers are higher powered medical lasers. We operate medical grade lasers in our clinic. We do not use IPL devices for laser hair removal. Using laser rather than IPL devices ensures a greater chance of permanent laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is safe and effective.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Laser hair removal treatment is best described as “the sensation of an elastic band ” being flicked against your skin. Pain thresholds can vary from person to person but generally the treatment is very well tolerated. As a rule of thumb if you have very thick hair you tend to experience more discomfort.

However, the majority of patients tolerate laser hair removal very well. The Zimmer cooling system which is used in conjunction with our lasers during each treatment session means that the treatment is very well tolerated.

What is the difference between lasers and IPL devices?

The difference between lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for the treatment of unwanted hairs is that laser is the gold standard for hair removal. (IPL is better suited to the treatment of pigmentation). At our laser clinic, our laser hair removal system  or equipment is the Cynosure Elite laser device.

Who is suitable for laser hair removal treatments?

Everyone. Because we have two different devices for laser hair removal, this means that we can treat a variety of skin tones.
