A guide to Skin Peeling

With so many peels out there to choose from, many people who visit our clinic often wonder which one is right for them. The answer depends on a variety of different factors; these will be assessed during your consultation with your practitioner. The practitioner will examine your skin and then they will decide on the most suitable peel for you. Visitors to our clinic often ask us why there are so many peels, and what is the difference between them? As each patient requires a different result from treatment it is important for us to be able to pick a certain peel to help with certain problems. When it comes to facial peels, there is definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ system. Today we are going to guide you through the different options for you!

Glycolic Peels

Glycolic peels are derived from sugar acids, they are known as AHA’s or alpha hydroxyl acids, AHA’s have a lower PH than your skin, this allows the peel to penetrate through the skin and dissolve the fatty bonds that hold the dead skin cells together, and this causes the old skin cells to slough off. Glycolics are great for opening pores, reefing the skin by helping the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Glycolics are beneficial to use in almost all skins, as everyone’s skin needs a’ good exfoliation’ from time to time. Glycolic help to lighten scars and pigmentation, with time it will improve the appearance of these marks on the skin. The peels are quick to perform and usually only take between 3-10 minutes to perform. We do recommend at least 4 peels a year to see the most benefit. Glycolic peels are by far one of our most popular treatments, you get results and you see an improvement. It is also a good idea to have a course of peels if you are going to have laser vein treatment on your face, as the skin is more even and helps to absorb the laser better. Glycolic peels are a quick and easy peel for most skin types.

Blue Peel Radiance

Brought to us by the makes or Obagi and the ‘blue peel’ comes the Blue peel radiance, a much gentler peel that its predecessor, it does what it says – it helps to make you look ‘radiant’ exactly how it does that is down to the ingredients. Containing Salicylic acid, Phytic acid and lactic acid, it helps eliminate large pores by acting as a whirlwind on the surface, the salicylic and phytic acid are great for calming skins of acne suffers while the lactic acid moisturises and draws in moisture. Whilst the blue peel radiance will give everyone a bright and fresh appearance, we highly recommend this peel if you have acne, or if you have recently started on the Clenziderm range. Together with the range the peel can give you the skin you’ve always wanted! If you want to improve your skin without anything too harsh this is also the peel for you.

Agera Combination Peel

Sometimes clients have difficult deciding between a peel and a microdermabrasion, they love the deep cleaning feeling they get after a microdermabrasion session, but they also feel like their skin could benefit from a peel. With the Agera peel we have a solution to this, sometimes you do actually need both. If your skin is very dry and dehydrated and you are suffering from flaky skin both is what you need. If you have a congested acne prone skin, they will also benefit from the combination peel. Using salicylic acid, lactic acid and ascorbic acid together ,results in a very superior peel. The ascorbic and lactic acid are very moisturising and leave the skin soft and comfortable, also the ascorbic acid ‘purges’ out all the debris that may be lurking in your pores! Together with the salicylic acid it leaves the skin glowing. It is of benefit to ageing skins, dehydrated and sun damaged skins, and skin prone to acne.

TCA Peel

The TCA- Trichloracetic acid peel is the ‘strongest’ peel that we have to offer, this doctor only peel is amazing at removing unwanted pigment and really resurfacing the skin in a gentler way than laser. It is a quick and comfortable treatment with proven results. We recommend people with sun damaged skin and pigmented skin to have at least 2-3 TCA peels to see a complete improvement in their skin. TCA peels also have to reverse the damage that you may have done to your skin in the sun.

With so much choice out there it is easy for the client to get confused, that is why we recommend a thorough skin consult. It may seem that the peels all do the same things, which is true, but they all work in different ways to do this, and we can decide which way will work best for you and what will get you the best result, at the end of each treatment one result is always the same- a happy satisfied customer!
